Our History The Agronomy department at the College of Agriculture, Raipur, established in 1968 under JNKVV, Jabalpur, became part of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur, on January 20, 1987. It focuses on integrated holistic approaches to agriculture, encompassing education, research, and extension activities to benefit farmers. The department offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral studies across various constituent colleges. Agronomical research is conducted through various projects, including AICRP's, network projects, and ICAR ad-hoc projects, aiming to enhance crop yields while preserving the environment. With nearly 65% of Chhattisgarh's cultivated area being rainfed, research priorities include optimizing rainfall use and addressing biotic and abiotic stressors. The department emphasizes crop diversification and sustainable agricultural practices to meet future challenges, such as climate change and resource scarcity. Market-driven agronomy, focusing on commercial, industrial, and environmental aspects, is essential for the department's future direction.
Our Mission The mission of the Department of Agronomy is to offer a high-quality, comprehensive, integrated and unique academic program in Agronomy and related fields to service the needs of Chhattisgarh.  Using an interdisciplinary agro-ecosystem approach to integrating all aspects of agronomy from the "ground to the table to the ground"  Improving quality of higher agricultural education and enhancing capacity of human resource in research.  Increasing gross enrolment ratio in formal and non-formal agricultural education through more education opportunities.  Enhancing integration of education with research and developing and nurturing new generation of scientists.  Attracting rural youth in agriculture.  Establishment of industry-education linkages.  Capacity building of faculty through training at the national and international level.  Skill and entrepreneurship development in rural school drop outs through vocational courses.  Regular manpower planning and development in agriculture sector with focus on research and development system, agri-service providing system, and agri-business.  Establishment of new research centers, centre of excellence for varied agro-climatic situations.  Promoting the responsible, ethical use and management of air, water, soil, plant and animal resources including sustainability in agricultural practices  Using global perspectives in addressing local and regional agricultural issues
Our Vision  Department of Agronomy is generating new knowledge and solutions for novel and improved production practices to ensure sustained accessibility to food nutrition, livelihood security, natural resource management and improved agro-ecosystem health.  Developing dynamic, effective, best and brightest brains of future generation of agronomist with global perspectives.  Sustainable increase in cropping intensity, productivity and profitability of farmers and empowerment of rural youths
Agronomy is a science and practice that looks at agriculture from an integrated holistic perspective. Agronomy department has been established at College of Agriculture, Raipur in the year 1968 under JNKVV, Jabalpur and became part of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur on 20th January, 1987. Department is imparting education, research and extension activities for betterment of farmer community. Under Graduate (UG), Post Graduate (PG) and Doctoral studies are being carried out under different constituent colleges of the University. Similarly, agronomical research has been undertaken through AICRP’s, Network projects, ICAR Ad-hoc projects and sponsored projects under PPP mode and transfer of technology to farmers (extension) performed through KVK’s. Agronomists deal plant and soil and develop innovation, farm practices and technologies that not only boost crop yields but also control adverse factors protecting environment. Agriculture has to be strengthened with modern production technologies with existing natural resources and agricultural ecosystem for sustainable growth. Crop diversification and suitability of crops under different land forms of Chhattisgarh needs accelerating higher production and profitability under rainfed ecology, which is nearly 65% of the total cultivated area. Research priorities will be on judicious use of available rainfall and amelioration of stress like biotic and abiotic factors. Besides, intensification of agriculture by using two or more crops in unit land. Agriculture is facing serious environmental conflict and crop production become more difficult with climate change and resource scarcity. Market driven Agronomy is need of hour towards commercial, industrial and environmental approaches of Agronomy, which will be focused in future.
