Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry

About Us The department offers post graduate and doctoral programmes with specialization in Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry covering various areas of research viz., soil fertility, soil physics, soil chemistry, soil carbon dynamics, heavy metal and soil pollutant study etc. The faculty of the department has vast experience in teaching, research and extension. The department also offers four courses at undergraduate level for B.Sc. (Ag.) Honors degree. Two All India Coordinated Research projects of ICAR are functional in the department i.e. AICRP on STCR (Soil Test Crop Response) which was initiated in the year 1981 and AICRP on LTFE (Long Term Fertilizer Experiment) initiated in 1999. One ad-hoc project sponsored by NTPC- Korba GOI on “Utilization of fly ash for improving degraded land” is also operational in the department. There are several projects running under PPP mode viz., IFFCO, Ajay Biotech, SAIL, Nature wall biotech, Aditya bioinnovation, Agrocel and Dharti agrochemicals. The department is well equipped with modern and sophisticated analytical instruments viz, ICP-OES, GC, IRGA, TDR and AAS. The department also has separate Referral Soil Testing Laboratory and one Tissue Testing Lab.
Our History The department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry was established in the year 1987 under Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur. Earlier it was under the Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur (M. P.).
Our Mission 1. To impart quality education in the field of soil science to PG and Ph.D. students. 2. To develop cost effective ready to use farmer’s friendly technologies for yield enhancement and sustaining soil health. 3. Dissemination of knowledge on soil fertility management at farmer’s field. 4. To give technical training to the personnel involved in the field of agriculture and soils. 5. Developing culture of quality research in the area of soils to develop innovative solutions
Our Vision (A) Teaching (Academic) • Initiation for Postgraduate programme at different constituent colleges of IGKV. • Preparation of practical manuals and text books as per the 5th Dean’s committee course curriculum. • Provision of coaching classes for competitive exams like JRF, SRF, ARS etc. (B) Research (Thrust areas) Projects on: • Center of excellence on Organic agriculture at COA, Raipur. • Center of excellence on Micronutrients, pollutants and heavy metals at COA,Raipur. Themes on: • Enhancing nutrient use efficiency: Increasing inputs use efficiency through Precision agriculture, Nano-Technology, Fertilizer fortification, Integrated nutrient management: indigenous mineral and byproduct sources. • Sustainable Soil and Produce Quality: Efficient composting techniques and integrated plant nutrient supply,Bio-fortication of food grains, Organic farming and produce quality characterization • Improving soil quality through organic matter additions and correcting nutrient imbalance. • Development of a workable index of soil quality assessment imbibing influence of different physical, chemical, and biological soil attributes. • Understanding resilience of degraded soils and restoration of their productivity.  Climate change and carbon sequestration • The carbon sequestration research in the context of sustainable management of land and soil resource and conserving deteriorating environment. • Conservation agriculture and carbon sequestration • Tillage and nutrient interaction in soil.  Minimizing soil pollution • Bio-remediation/phyto-remediation of contaminated soils. • Quality compost production and establishing quality standards • Solid waste and waste waters –quality assessment and recycling of agro industries  Crop diversity: • Identification of crop genotype for deficient nutrient tolerance.
