Department of Agricultural Microbiology

About Us Master’s program was started in 2006 and doctoral program has also started from 2013. The faculty is well recognized by various scientific organizations and findings were published. The faculty members have got several research awards and fellowships including Jawaharlal Nehru award from ICAR. The faculty of this department has successfully organized ICAR sponsored national level training courses on beneficial microbes.
Our History The soil microbiology unit of the Department of Soil Science had its actual inception in 1989 after funding from university for establishment of soil microbiology laboratory. Then after this laboratory got sanctions of more than 20 externally funded adhoc projects from ICAR, NATP, DBT, CSIR, CGCOST etc. and now has turned as department of Agricultural Microbiology from 2005. Since inception the department is concentrating on teaching, research and extension activities. The priority microbiological research areas are biological nitrogen fixation, phosphate mobilization, high C/N ratio containing waste recycling, bio-fungicides, bioremediation of polluted water industrial microbiology, screening and characterization including molecular level characterization of natural microbial resources especially for stress tolerant microbes, maintenance of beneficial microbial germplasm repository, quality control of bio-inoculants and their mass production.
Our Mission  Studying and exploiting local natural microbial resources for sustainable agriculture and other beneficial purposes  Facilitating teaching and research skills among the Master and Ph.D students ofAgrl. Microbiology.  Development of eco-friendly microbial technologies including elite microbial formulations (good quality liquid and foliar bioinoculants etc.) and their disseminations.  Production and distribution of of location specific good quality culture including stress tolerant culture of beneficial microbes  Human Resource Development in various specialized applications of agricultural microbiology including imparting training to farmers for popularization, use and production of bio-inoculants
Our Vision  The department has clear vision for improvement and advancement in working of the department to raise quality of teaching, research and extension activities by encouraging students for “Earn while Learn” and staff for Honorarium based Innovative Extra Work” in order to uplift socio-economic status of poor farmers and unemployed youth of the CG State.
Microbes play key role in our life. Without microbes soil would be an inactive geological mass incapable of supporting plant life and without plant life, animal life would not be possible. Beneficial microbes can fix atmospheric N2, solubilize native and added soil phosphates, increase immobile nutrient and water use efficiency, decompose organic wastes and crop residues, detoxify pesticides, suppress insect pests/ weeds/ pathogens, enhance cycling of plant nutrients and produce bioactive compounds such as plant growth promoting substances (PGPS), vitamins, hormones, enzymes, antibiotics and other important products that improve soil and plant health for sustainable agriculture. Presently an area that appears to hold the greatest promise for technological advances in natural resource management and conservation is that of exploitation of natural micro-organisms for useful purposes. With gradually demanding to change over from chemical based farming systems to more sustainable kinds of ecofriendly food-fodder-fuel production, it may be inevitable to use eco-friendly location specific, stress tolerant microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture. The bio-diversity vis-a-vis the microbial diversity of Chhattisgarh is already enough documented. But, in particular to microbial spectrum of this region, it is yet to be adequately explored and exploited for many possible useful purposes simply because of limitations in technical know-how and technical man-power in the related field in this region.
