Department of Plant Physiology

About Us The Department of Plant Physiology at IGKV Raipur was officially founded in the year 2000 with the goals of providing undergraduate and graduate programs in plant physiology and also carrying out research in areas associated with the physiology of plants. Dr. M. I. Khan became the first head of the department. During his tenure, a solid foundation for agricultural physiological research was established. Since it was intended from the beginning to keep attention on "plants," the department is well recognized at both the national and international levels for basic and applied research on various aspects of plant physiology. The department has strived to make its teaching and research curricula increasingly plant physiology centric and relevant to the overall science of plant productivity. The department has been working for the past 23 years to comprehensively address plant responses to stress and provide basic inputs that could be used in breeding crop plants for tolerance to drought and other abiotic stresses. The department also engaged in various aspects of medicinal and aromatic plants, such as developing improved varieties, cultivation practices, and post-harvest and processing technologies. The faculty members of the department developed improved techniques for gum tapping in many forest trees and also researched to improve the harvesting, processing, and value addition of natural resin and gum. Also, the department offers different UG courses in plant physiology, medicinal, and aromatic plants, including some experiential learning module courses such as diagnostic physiology and plant growth regulators for the B.Sc. (Ag) program. The Department is also offering M.Sc. (Ag) and Ph.D. programs in plant physiology, along with some supporting courses like stress physiology, growth and developmental physiology, seed physiology, mineral nutrition, molecular biology, and functional genomics. The research activity of the faculty members of the department includes some
Our History
Our Mission • To conduct basic and strategic research to understand the underlying processes that determines the plant productivity and enhancing the physiological efficiencies to improve the productivity and production of crop plants. • The department strives to serve as a centre for academic excellence in the area of plant physiology for graduate and post graduate students. • To train Post-Graduate students leading to M.Sc. (Ag) and Ph.D. degree. • To provide consultancy and diagnostic services in the nutritional and physiological disorders of crops. • The department is actively involved in the academic, research and extension activities.
Our Vision To be the advance centre of plant stress physiology for addressing the challenges of climate change facing Indian Agriculture through establishment of molecular stress physiology laboratory and high throughput plant phenomics facilities.
The department is well-recognized nationally and internationally for applied and basic research on various aspects of plant physiology. The department has an outstanding track record of research in areas related to abiotic stresses, canopy photosynthesis, water use efficiency, chemical regulation of plant growth & nutrition and bio-prospecting in both field and horticultural crops. One of the major thematic research areas at the department has been to comprehensively address plant physiological processes and crop plant responses to changing climate scenarios. The efforts at the department have culminated in enhancing our understanding of the physiological basis of the response of plants to abiotic stresses and developing newer approaches towards drought-tolerant crops. The department also focused on various aspects of medicinal and aromatic plants such as developing improved varieties, cultivation practices, post-harvest and processing technologies. The faculty members of the department have developed improved techniques of gum tapping in many forest trees and also carrying out research to improve the harvesting, processing, and value addition of Natural Resin and Gums in Chhattisgarh. In the process of achieving the task, the department realizes that the only way to sustain this battle is to build an army of excellent human resources that will continue to address the problem of stresses at large. Therefore, among the vision the department is also aggressively emphasizing the establishment of advanced facilities to develop conceptual and experimental skills in students as well as young researchers. The department has a good mix of senior and junior faculty that combines the richness of experience & enthusiasm. The department faces formidable challenges in the years to come both from the increasing demand for enhancing the productivity of climate-smart crops & from the radical changes in the approaches to address these challenges. The department is trying to keep pa
