One day workshop on importance of role of Weed Management in ensuring Food Security was organized at College of Agriculture, Raipur on 1st March, 2024 under the joint aegis of All India Coordinated Research Project (Weed Management) and the ICAR-Directorate of Weed Research, Jabalpur. Dr. Girish Chandel, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, IGKV as chief guest said that weed management has an important role in producing adequate crops to ensure food security for the entire population of the world. If there is no proper management of weeds in the fields, crop production reduces significantly and sometimes up to three-fourth of the crop is destroyed due to weeds. He called upon the agricultural scientists and field staff of the Agriculture Department, CG Govt. to pay proper attention to weed management tools in the fields. More than 100 scientists, subject matter experts, farm managers, technical assistants, PG and PhD students working in different campuses of IGKV, Raipur and state government officials like rural agricultural extension officers working in Raipur district participated in the workshop. On this occasion, Dr. J. S.Mishra Director, Directorate of Weed Management, Jabalpur, said that due to shortage of laborers in the agricultural sector, there is a lot of difficulty in managing weeds and farmers' dependence on chemical herbicides instead of mechanical methods is increasing. He said that today very good herbicides are available in the market to control various types of weeds, by using them properly, weeds can be managed better and the income of farmers can be increased. During the workshop, participants visited the exhibition of weed diversity and observed the major weeds found in Chhattisgarh and were provided information about the herbicides used for their control. During this workshop Dr. V.K. Tripathi, Director Research Services, Dr. Ajay Verma, Director Extension, Dr. G.K. Das, Dean College of Agriculture, Raipur, scientific staff of Agronomy department and other dignitaries were present.
