The All India Coordinated Research Project on Palms celebrated World Coconut Day with a great zeal on 2nd September 2024 with the theme of "Coconut for a circular Economy: Building partnerships for maximum value" at S. G. College of Agriculture and Research Station, Jagdalpur. On this regard one day farmers’ training cum demonstration of soil water conservation was carried out at the centre. 42 farmers participated and benefitted by the program by the technical sessions on production technology, processing, value addition and plant protection in coconut followed by farmer-scientist interaction. The session was chaired by Dr. R. S. Netam (Dean, SGCARS, Jagdalpur) and he urged the farmers to take coconut as one of the component in their farming system. Shri Somaru Mourya, a progressive farmer from Chokar was the special guest of the programme. He shared his experiences of growing coconut and motivated the farmers to expand the area of coconut in their field. Dr Beena Singh (SIC/AICRP on Palms) enlightened the farmers about the possibilities and potential of coconut in Chhattisgarh and also discussed about the production technology of coconut along with soil moisture conservation techniques. Dr. Padmakshi Thakur (Scientist, Horticulture) delivered lecture on the intercropping of tubers and other suitable vegetables under the coconut plantation while Dr. Dev Chand Salam (Scientist, Plant Pathology) interacted about the major diseases in coconut and their control measures. Shri Rajesh Patel (JRF, Entomology) detailed about the insect pest management in coconut and also demonstrated the vermicomposting of coconut waste. The importance and health benefits of coconut were deduced by Shri Upendra Nayak (TA, Horticulture). The technical session and farmer-scientist interaction was followed by the field visit and coconut seedling distribution.
